Comparison of efficacy of oral and topical route of tranexamic acid in patients of melasma

Background: Melasma is a common pigmentary disorder which presents with brown coloured macules that occurs around the sun-exposed areas of skin, particularly on face. Many treatment modalities are present but often it resistant to treatment. The aim our study was compare therapeutic efficacy and safety tranexamic acid administered by oral topical route in patients melasma. Methods: Our prospective, randomised consisted 40 new melasma patients. 20 were given Oral Tranexamic 250 mg twice daily, classified as Group 1, other (3%) day (fully covering lesion), 2 for period 8 weeks both broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50). MASI determined before starting (baseline), 4 weeks. Based reduction mean MASI, response graded subjective adverse effects also recorded at each visit. Results: Mean percentage scores higher (52.1%) compared (31.9%) group. In group, headache only effect, however, erythema, burning, acneiform eruptions reported. At final assessment, fair improvement seen groups. Conclusions: Both well efficacious melasma, two safer provided better proportional response.
